What We Learned From Gym Shutdowns

One year ago today, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued an order to temporarily close gyms, fitness centers, recreation centers, bowling alleys, indoor water parks, movie theaters and trampoline parks across the state due to concerns regarding COVID-19. For the next 70 days - although we did not know the length these closures would last at the time - Ohioans that frequented workout facilities and depended on gyms to maintain their fitness would find themselves abruptly cut off. With similar restrictions being applied to other states, workout equipment flew off the shelves. Whether they searched brick-and-mortar locations or online, individuals looking to exercise came to a sudden realization: They were going to have to change the way they approached their workouts.

Gyms Open, Not Full

Shortly after the closure of gyms and other workout facilities, Governor DeWine and the State were quickly under fire from gym owners and fitness enthusiasts. Some taking their cases to court, and winning. However, even after the shutdown was lifted on March 26, many were hesitant as COVID-19 was running rampant in the US. Even now, I find that many individuals I speak with would rather stay home and play it safe.

As Americans purchased, and continue to purchase, workout equipment for their homes rather than reclaiming their gym memberships, at-home workouts had found their way into the spotlight.

At-Home Workout Boom

There are tested theories in business and marketing claiming that once someone has tried something out, they are more likely to try it again. Because of this, I believe that we will continue to see a large number of Americans choosing at-home workout alternatives over gyms, or supplementary with gyms. With the added convenience and privacy, this is not a trend that will likely fade when COVID-19 numbers die down to manageable levels. Not to mention, US citizens spent a pretty penny on the equipment they have now.

In 2020, at-home workout companies such as Peloton saw a breathtaking boom in sales. Just take a look at these numbers:

  • 2020 revenue: $2.95 billion, up 139%

  • Forecast for next two quarters: $2.25 billion, up 99%

  • Stock price: Up 305% past 12 months

But what do these numbers and trends mean? Is there a lesson the fitness industry, and the American public, can take away?

Health & Fitness Reaches Beyond Gym Walls

An individuals health and fitness reaches beyond gym walls. It is an essential part of just plain living. Whether they acknowledge that or not, may play a big part in their success. Gyms can be wonderful resources for those looking to improve their health - no duh, Bianca - but we cannot trap our approach to a healthy lifestyle behind gym doors.

This past year, and the shutdowns that accompanied it, forced many of us to realize this. In fact, my business - which was founded mid-pandemic - is grounded in at-home workouts and implementing a sustainable, healthy lifestyle. It is important that we take a moment and remember the difficult times that taught us this lesson.
